Running from September 11th through May 23rd, seeing sound, hearing time brings together seven works across five large-scale installations spanning 1,500 square metres of the museum’s Rieckhallen. The show focuses on Sakamoto’s interdisciplinary practice, exploring the intersections of sound, visual art, film and performance.

Highlights include IS YOUR TIME, which transforms real-time earthquake data into sound via a piano damaged in Japan’s 2011 tsunami, alongside collaborative works developed from Sakamoto’s 2017 album Async with artist Shiro Takatani and filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul. The exhibition also features films by Carsten Nicolai using music from Sakamoto’s final album, 12.

Curated by Ingrid Buschmann and Sachiko Namba, the exhibition forms part of Hamburger Bahnhof’s 30th anniversary programme and opens during Berlin Art Week.
