TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO / WAWV) — A manufacturing plant that employs more than 200 people in Terre Haute will draw down its workforce and ultimately close next year, the company announced Friday.

“The planned adjustment of our U.S. production network is an important step toward strengthening the long-term competitiveness of our North American business,” said Viktor Molnar, COO of thyssenkrupp Automotive Technology. “The automotive industry is undergoing profound change. Customer requirements, volume developments and cost structures call for leaner, more focused and more efficient production structures. By realigning the affected chassis activities with a focus on Hamilton, we aim to simplify our U.S. footprint in this area, deploy resources more effectively and create a stronger operational foundation for existing and future customer programs.”

Thyssenkrupp Presta North America’s production site will close, and the “chassis activities will be realigned” to Hamilton, Ohio.

“We recognize that the planned closure represents a significant change for the employees in Terre Haute and for the local community,” said Yashar Kazemi, President of thyssenkrupp Presta North America, LLC. “The site and its employees have made an important contribution to our business and our customers over the years. Our focus now is managing the next steps in an orderly and responsible manner and in line with applicable requirements.”

The company announced in a news release that the move was in response to changing market conditions.

Vigo County Commissioner Chris Switzer commented on the closing:

“Today’s announcement from Thyssenkrupp Presta North America is difficult news for the hardworking employees and families impacted here in Vigo County. We appreciate the company’s investment in our community over the years and thank them for the jobs they provided.

Vigo County is not going to sit idle. We will be working aggressively alongside local and regional partners to assist in marketing and selling this facility as quickly as possible so we can attract new opportunities, new investment, and most importantly — get Vigo County residents back to work.”
