German Inflation Accelerates to 2.7% in March 2026 | Energy Price Surge - News and Statistics

According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, Germany’s inflation rate, measured by the change in the consumer price index compared to the same month last year, reached 2.7 percent in March 2026. This represents the highest level observed since January 2024. The rate was 1.9 percent in February and 2.1 percent in January. The office’s president noted that significant price increases for energy products are driving inflation, with fuels and heating oil seeing sharp price rises for consumers since the start of the conflict in Iran.

Energy Prices Surge Annually and Monthly

Overall energy product prices in March were 7.2 percent higher than in March 2025, marking the first year-on-year increase since December 2023. Within this category, fuel prices rose by 20.0 percent and light heating oil prices increased substantially by 44.4 percent. These jumps are largely attributed to warfare in Iran and the Middle East and the resulting price movements on the crude oil market. Compared to the previous month of February, overall energy prices climbed 7.7 percent in March, with fuels up 15.6 percent and light heating oil up 43.2 percent.

Contrasting Trends in Household Energy and Food

Despite the increase for heating oil, total household energy in March was 1.2 percent cheaper than a year earlier, with electricity, natural gas, and district heating all seeing lower prices. This is partly linked to government measures implemented since the start of the year, such as reduced grid fees. Food prices, meanwhile, rose by a below-average 0.9 percent year-on-year. Specific increases were noted for items like sugar, jam, honey, confectionery, fruit, fresh vegetables, and meat, while edible fats and oils, dairy products, and olive oil became cheaper. Egg prices rose noticeably.

Core Inflation and Price Movements for Goods and Services

The inflation rate excluding food and energy, often called core inflation, remained at 2.5 percent in March. Overall goods prices increased by 2.3 percent compared to March 2025. Services prices rose by a stronger 3.2 percent over the same period, with significant increases for social facility services, combined passenger transport, vehicle maintenance, and restaurant services. Net cold rents also rose year-on-year.

On a monthly basis, the overall consumer price index increased by 1.1 percent from February to March. Besides energy, price rises were seen for international flights, package tours, and clothing, while food prices remained nearly constant.
