Adidas' Powerphase Gets a Puffy Rebuild Inspired by 2000s Skate Shoes

The fitness aesthetics of the 1980s are combining with the look of 2000s skateboarding shoes in the name of Go Skate Day.

The APB x Adidas Powerphase Puff is the latest classic sneaker from the Three Stripes to get a billowed build and the freshest entry for The Whitaker Group‘s “Do Not Duplicate” series. Extra padding on the tongue and collar blow up the proportions of the silhouette, while a suede, mesh and leather upper deviates from the typical leather build. Striping is incorporated into a mesh window at midfoot, and the mustache has been altered with a section with cutouts hanging freely.

A tonal gray colorway will come alongside another one in brown and gray, and each comes with a metal hangtag featured in previous “Do Not Duplicate” sneakers.

In addition to the sneaker release, APB will celebrate Go Skate Day Sunday by hosting a skateboarding tournament at its Charlotte store. Cash prizes will be available in addition to food.

While introduced during the late-’80s fitness craze as a competitor for the Reebok Workout, the Powerphase is best known for its revival by Kanye West, now known as Ye, through his Adidas Yeezy line in 2017. Little changed with its reintroduction but for the gold debossing of “Calabasas” at midfoot to match the much-hyped sweatpants bearing the name of the same California city.

Other Adidas sneakers to get the oversized treatment include the XLG versions of the Samba, Superstar and Adistar, the latter of which is essentially a more affordable version of Pharrell’s Jellyfish. Under a different moniker but of the same spirit is the Campus 00s. The Whitaker Group and Adidas also puffed together recently on the BW Army.

The APB x Adidas Powerphase Puff will release through a drawing hosted by the boutique open now through Thursday, as well as first-come, first-serve drops Saturday at its stores and website. Pricing is set at $150.
