The Deutsches Haus is celebrating spring with its Frühlingsfest, formally known as Volksfest. The annual event showcases German culture and its history in Southeast Louisiana while celebrating the end of winter. There are traditional activities like the traditional Maypole dance. “It’s kind of the intertwining together of friends and family in neighborhoods and no matter where you’re from, which is what we all want you here,” said Deutsches Haus organizer Sabine Chadborn.It is symbolic of the sense of community that the Deutsches Haus hopes to celebrate, bringing everyone together. There are also German foods freshly prepared on site, including an assortment of brats, schnitzel and pretzels. Not to mention some unique souvenirs to take home, like your own custom-made beer stein. “We can get our hands dirty, we can get messy, and we can also, like, create something super unique that you can have forever,” said Jennifer Nicholls with Crescent City Clay Works. She and her husband are one of the marquee vendors this year. “Even if you’ve never touched it, (clay) we’re going to be able to walk you through step by step how to construct a beer stein, and give you options to customize it,” said Reid Nicholls. You can also take home a new furry member of your family with adoptables available from Animal Rescue New Orleans each day. ARNO is also organizing this year’s Dachshund Racing event Friday, a must-see spectacle. “Some of them will run sideways and try to find their owner,” said Ginnie Baumann with ARNO. “You know, it’s total chaos.
