Germany secured a 2–1 victory over Ivory Coast in Group E of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and booked its place in the knockout stage.
According to Reuters on Saturday, June 20, striker Deniz Undav came on in the second half and equalized in the 68th minute before scoring again in stoppage time to complete a comeback for Germany.
Ivory Coast had taken the lead in the first half through Franck Kessié, finishing from a rebound after a shot by Amad Diallo during an attack from the left side.
Germany found the net twice in the first half as well, but both goals were disallowed after VAR reviews for fouls in the build-up.
Despite Ivory Coast’s stronger first-half performance, Germany struggled to convert chances while playing in front of a large crowd in Toronto and went into halftime trailing by one goal.
In the second half, Julian Nagelsmann’s side made tactical adjustments and increased pressure, taking control of the match.
After the game, Nagelsmann said his team deserved the win and praised the players for fighting until the final whistle.
With the result, Germany topped Group E with six points and confirmed qualification for the knockout round, while Ivory Coast remained on three points.
