Dejon Fortune is charged with felony intoxication manslaughter after allegedly crashing into another car, killing the driver, Sung Bae

Fortune was celebrating his 20th birthday in the hours before the crash, police alleged in an affidavit

A 20-year-old Texas man is charged with felony intoxication manslaughter after police alleged he crashed his car into another vehicle, killing the driver.

Dejon Fortune, 20, was arrested following the crash in Katy, Texas, which the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office said occurred after 2 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23.

“The preliminary investigation indicates a white BMW driven by Fortune hit a black Cadillac driven by Sung Bae, 53,” the sheriff’s office said. “Bae was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, Fortune had been celebrating his 20th birthday hours before the crash and allegedly admitted to having drinks that night.

Fortune told police he had gone to his birthday party at a friend’s house at 10:30 p.m., the affidavit claimed, before leaving to go to Taco Bell and remaining at the fast food restaurant until it closed.

Following the crash, Fortune allegedly told police he did not remember when he’d had his last drink.

Per the affidavit, the BMW allegedly driven by Fortune was owned by his father.

Two passengers were in the car with Fortune at the time of the crash and one allegedly told police they removed alcohol from the car following the collision, authorities claimed.

One of the passengers allegedly also said she believed Fortune was driving between 70 and 80 miles per hour, the affidavit stated.

Police said the crash caused Bae’s vehicle to go off the road before it struck a light pole and two trees.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Bae as they navigate this heartbreaking loss,” Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan said in a statement. “Impaired driving continues to claim innocent lives in our community. We urge everyone to make responsible choices and never get behind the wheel while under the influence.”

It is not immediately clear if Fortune has entered a plea.
