Gobao introduces new motors with integrated gearbox

Bosch and DJI Amflow are facing stiff competition: Two new and particularly powerful mid-drive motors are set to launch with a built-in manual transmission. However, in the two new motors from Gobao, these do not operate with gears in the traditional sense.

The DJI-backed brand Amflow has already attracted attention with its exceptionally high-performance motors, and now manufacturer Gobao is following suit with two new mid-drive systems. Both feature an integrated transmission unit from the outset. In principle, integrating the drivetrain directly into the motor offers certain advantages, such as better protection from external influences. At the same time, however, this high level of integration is unlikely to make maintenance or repairs any easier for the average user. Conventional derailleur systems still tend to be more accessible and easier to service or modify.

The new Gobao X1 and X1P do not rely on a traditional gear system with fixed steps. Instead, they use an electrically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT). Such systems allow for very fine and seamless gear adjustments, although the overall gear range remains limited. Gobao specifies a range of 400 percent for the X1 and 500 percent for the X1P, corresponding to gear ratios of 1:1 to 1:4 and 1.08:1 to 1:4, respectively. Both motors weigh 3.85 kilograms (8.5 lbs), but the X1P is positioned as the significantly more powerful option. It is rated for a peak output of 1,500 watts and up to 150 Nm of torque, while the X1 delivers up to 1,200 watts and 120 Nm. For regulatory compliance, the continuous rated power of both systems is limited to 250 watts—this figure primarily reflects the requirements of the European market, where stricter e-bike regulations apply.
