Zelensky warned that only continued sanctions can persuade Moscow to choose peace, urging allies to keep pressure while boosting support for Ukraine.

So that Russia chooses the path to peace, sanctions against it must remain in force.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said during a joint meeting with the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Friedrich Merz, in Berlin.

“I am grateful to Germany for supporting our efforts toward peace. The war must end, and Russia must hear this signal and feel that this choice in favor of peace must be made. That is why sanctions against Russia must be and must remain in force.”

Context of sanctions and the EU’s stance

He emphasized that pressure on Russia must continue, while at the same time providing Ukraine with full support.

According to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kalas, during her visit to Bucha on March 31 she stated that the EU and member states are working to overcome obstacles and approve the 20th package of sanctions against Russia at the next European Council meeting. Earlier, Hungary blocked the package’s adoption.

The European Union continues to intensify pressure on Russia to support peace in Ukraine.

In the context of further steps, Kyiv emphasizes the importance of a united international community and maintaining the sanctions regime until the war ends completely.

Thus, preserving sanctions against Russia remains a key tool of pressure for peace, stability, and the full restoration of Ukraine’s sovereignty.
