Adidas to Launch First 3D-printed Basketball Shoe in July

After unveiling its 3D-printed basketball sneaker during March Madness, Adidas has now announced an imminent release for the previously unnamed model.

The Adidas BB.01 takes performance basketball into a new era with a 3D-printed lattice forming its upper. Designed to steady the foot without any distractions and with a bespoke fit, the shell is printed with sweeping lines that give way to breathable windows near the middle of each side. A bootie with traditional lacing then sits within for an arrangement quite similar to James Harden‘s recent signature shoes, and the comparison is strengthened with a similar Three Stripes motif running down the heel.

This sneaker will be the first release out of Adidas’ Project R.A.P. platform, which is short for “Radical Athlete Perception” and is bringing additive manufacturing to performance footwear in several sports. A 3D-printed soccer cleat was shown after the BB.01’s initial reveal, and Adidas has also confirmed development for American football.

Fernando Mendoza, the top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft coming off a national championship and Heisman trophy, was one of several football players to visit Adidas’ Portland campus to get an early look at Project. R.A.P.

In a March press release, he said: “Coming to Portland with this class and seeing what the brand is building — the innovation, the investment, the people — it reinforced that this is where I want to be. I can’t wait to get to work.”

3D printing has also been seen at Adidas through its 4D line, which has employed lattice midsoles on shoes for lifestyle and running, as well as its Climacool shoes for everyday wear.

Rivals Nike have worked with Zellerfeld for its own 3D printing efforts, which have focused on new silhouettes inspired by the Air Max 1 and Air Max 95.

The Adidas BB.01 will release July 14 through the Confirmed app. Pricing is set at $250.
