A man accused of shooting at several Berlin businesses was taken into custody after a bail review hearing Wednesday. A judge ordered that Richard Devoid be held on preventative detention. Devoid was originally released on his own recognizance by a bail order with specific stipulations that required him to check in with the Berlin Police Department weekly, go to therapy and stay 50 feet away from the victims and their property. Police also searched Devoid’s property and vehicles again for weapons. At the bail review hearing, Devoid’s lawyer said the original order kept Devoid on a “short leash.” He also said Devoid has been complying with the order. The prosecutor argued that Devoid was a danger to the community and emphasized his belief that the shootings were targeted. Ultimately, Judge Jonathan Frizzell decided that the number, nature and pattern of Devoid’s alleged crimes make him a danger to the community. Court documents say that Devoid is charged with nine felony counts of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon.
