A 25-year-old man was taken into custody early Monday morning after police say he crashed his Porsche into the median while driving the wrong way on Interstate 95.
Around 3 a.m. Monday, Massachusetts State Police troopers responded to reports of a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lane in the Reading area of the highway, the agency said in a statement.
Before troopers arrived, the vehicle, a black Porsche 911, crashed in the left lane by Exit 54A in Woburn, State Police said. No injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved.
Police arrested the driver, John Tarshi, 25, of Lawrence, and charged him with operating under the influence of liquor.
The crash comes as Massachusetts pours between $50 and $75 million into a new statewide system aimed at preventing and detecting wrong-way drivers on highways.
The system will include more than 400 locations, representing a massive expansion of the current 16 detection systems at exits and on-ramps in Bernardston, Webster, Burlington, Chelmsford, Danvers, Barnstable, Plymouth and Boston.
“I want us doing everything we can to prevent and stop wrong-way driving,” Gov. Maura Healey said last month. “And we’ll do whatever we can to make our roads safer.”
