BMW has initiated a massive recall, the second in a year, with both relating to starter motor issues.
Most BMW models sold in SA as far back as 2016 are being recalled due to a starter glitch.
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) announced in a media statement on Thursday that BMW 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X3 and X4 models from the past decade were being recalled, affecting 10 961 vehicles.
“According to the supplier, due to production-related factors, the affected vehicles may experience increased wear of the solenoid switch after a high number of start operations. As a result, the engine’s starting capability deteriorates. Under certain circumstances, the engine may no longer be able to start,” the NCC statement said.
“In addition, a short circuit in the solenoid switch cannot be ruled out, which may lead to local overheating at the starter. In such a case, smoke may be visible or noticeable while driving or when leaving the vehicle.”
BMW recommends that vehicles not be left unattended after the engine has been started. For the same reason, BMW drivers are urged not to use the “Remote Engine Start” function on the My BMW App or the remote-control key until the repair has been completed.
Consumers are urged to visit their nearest authorised BMW dealership “immediately” to arrange an inspection and repair, which will be carried out free of charge.
Using their vehicle identification number, owners can check on the BMW website whether their car is affected by the recall.
This is the second massive recall by BMW related to starter motors in a year. In October, the automaker recalled several models because water could enter their starter motor, potentially leading to rust, fire or malfunction. It affected 12 491 BMWs sold in SA, also from 2016.
