Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its latest high-performance electric car.

The new CLA45 revives a name which was previously worn by the brand’s four-cylinder performance car, but brings a new three-motor electric powertrain capable of getting the car from 0-60mph in under three seconds.

Mercedes-AMG says that it has utilised its learnings from the new GT 4-Door Coupe, which allows it to develop up to 670bhp. With adaptive damping, the ride of the car can be firmed up or softened by switching through ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’ and ‘AMGFORCE+’ driving modes.

That final setting unlocks a new ‘sound’ which mimics that of an AMG four-cylinder engine, which was found on the previous CLA45. Drivers can also use ‘simulated gearchanges’ for extra involvement.

With its three-motor setup, the CLA45 can actively distribute torque between the front and rear wheels. It also allows drivers to direct all power to the rear wheels if required.

Mercedes-AMG says that the CLA45 should be able to return up to 416 miles from a single charge, while 800-volt architecture means that a 10 to 80 per cent charge can be completed in 22 minutes. In all, the CLA45 can charge at speeds of up to 330kW. A multi-source heat pump allows the car to pre-condition itself to the right temperature in order to achieve the best-possible charge speeds, too.

Inside, there’s a similar basic layout to the standard CLA, though some performance upgrades have been fitted. Highlights include a new AMG Track Pace system which works as a personal racing coach, with drivers able to record and analyse lap times when on track.

Mercedes-AMG has yet to confirm UK pricing, but it’s expected that further details will be announced shortly.
