Speaking to ESC Kompakt, the German Head of Delegation has confirmed that they will stick to a national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2027.

Tina Sikorski, the Head of Delegation for Germany, has confirmed to ESC Kompakt that SWR will continue to use a national selection to determine its representative for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027. Speaking at Eurovision in Concert last weekend, she explained that the delegation is pleased with how the 2026 selection went and want to continue to build it during the coming years. She confirmed it is “very, very likely.” that the national selection remains long term, but that personally she is open to an internal selection should the right name come along.

Germany has used televised national selections to select their representative for the Eurovision Song Contest annually since 2022. On a handful of occasions, the broadcaster has opted for internal selections, since 2000 this occurred in 2009, 2011 (Artist only), 2016 (planned internal but artist was dropped) and 2020.

Sarah Engels will represent Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 in Vienna with her song, “Fire”. She won the German national final, receiving 38.3% of the votes cast in the superfinal. In addition to performing in the Grand Final, she will also perform during the first semi-final on May 12.

Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest+

Germany was one of seven countries to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. The country has taken part in every contest since then, apart from in 1996, when they failed to make it through the qualifying round. To date Germany has won the contest twice. The first time was in 1982 when Nicole sang “Ein Bisschen Frieden” in Harrogate, which later became a global hit. Germany didn’t win again until 2010 when Lena sang “Satellite” in Oslo. She received 9 sets of 12 points, scoring 246 points overall.
