While Volkswagen’s design language usually takes shape around four wheels, its newest licensed vehicle arrives with pedals beneath a flat-white frame. Developed and manufactured by n+ under license from Volkswagen, the Smart eBike range includes a Sport model and a Crossover model, with pre-orders open ahead of deliveries planned for the fourth quarter of 2026.
From the side, both bicycles look clean and almost diagrammatic, with the battery enclosed inside an oversized down tube and most of the cabling disappearing into the frame.
The Sport keeps a conventional diamond frame with a rigid aluminum fork; 2.2-inch urban tires maintain its lean profile. The Crossover drops the top tube and adds 100 mm of front suspension, while its rear rack and wider tires give it a more utility-minded stance. Along each frame runs a slim illuminated line which traces a car-like graphic across the plain white surface.

The central idea by Volkswagen sits between the handlebars of its Smart eBike, where a digital instrument cluster shares space with a live image of the traffic behind. n+ describes Smart View as the first fully integrated digital rear-view camera on an eBike. A camera and radar unit built into the rear mudguard watch approaching vehicles; when traffic enters range, the system can activate the rear image on the 3.5-inch display and issue a blind-spot warning.
The light strip along the top tube gives the same automotive thinking a more visible form. It functions as a daytime running light, then turns red under braking or amber when the rider signals. The optional Smart Helmet can repeat those signals behind the rider, though the product site warns that the behavioral lighting lacks street approval in Germany and France.

Beneath the bodywork, both models use a 250 W Yamaha PW-X3 mid-drive motor rated at 85 Nm of torque, with pedal assistance limited to 25 km/h. Yamaha’s automatic support mode reduces power on level ground and increases it on climbs, adjusting the amount of assistance without a manual change from the rider. Six riding modes can also be selected through the Volkswagen-inspired dashboard.
A removable 490 Wh battery sits inside the down tube and offers a claimed range of up to 162 km. An optional 814 Wh battery can be mounted at the rear for longer rides. The Sport weighs 27.5 kg in a medium frame, while the Crossover reaches 28 kg with its suspension fork and rack. An optional security pack adds an 85 dB alarm and Apple Find My.

The accessory system pushes the car analogy beyond the bicycle itself. Accelerometers inside the Smart Helmet detect a hard crash and begin a countdown through the connected app; without a response, the system can send the rider’s location to an emergency contact. The 47-gram Smart Glasses place navigation and blind-spot alerts within the wearer’s field of view through a microdisplay, leaving the handlebar screen as one layer in a larger visual interface.
For now, the bicycles remain pre-production models, with delivery dependent on completed manufacturing and certification. The strongest part of the proposal is its physical translation of road communication: a frame that signals its next move and a cockpit that keeps an eye behind. Volkswagen’s identity appears here through behavior as much as branding, reduced to a strip of light and a small moving image between the grips.
