German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has signaled that a recent high-profile resignation could create an opportunity to reshape his cabinet, hinting at possible changes to the composition of the federal government.

Speaking to broadcaster ZDF on Sunday, Merz was asked whether the departure of a senior politician over the weekend could lead to a cabinet reshuffle, News.Az reports, citing Reuters.

“It could be an opportunity,” Merz said.

He added that the resignation may provide a chance “to reconsider the composition of the federal government.”

Merz did not identify which ministers could be affected or provide a timeline for any potential changes.

His comments came a day after the resignation of a senior government figure, fueling speculation about a broader reorganization within Germany’s ruling coalition.

Any cabinet reshuffle would mark one of the first significant changes to Merz’s government since he took office and could influence the administration’s priorities as it navigates domestic and international challenges.

The German government has not announced any official cabinet changes, and Merz’s remarks indicate that discussions remain under consideration rather than a confirmed decision.
