Most conversations about new e-bikes focus on motors, batteries and range. But one of the more interesting developments this year has little to do with speed. Instead, it’s about helping riders better understand what’s happening behind them.
Volkswagen, working with e-bike manufacturer n+, is unveiling a pair of premium electric bikes featuring a new Smart View safety system that borrows technology more commonly found in modern cars. While the bikes themselves are aimed at the luxury end of the market—and carry premium price tags—the technology raises an interesting question: could advanced rider-awareness systems eventually become as common on bicycles as daytime running lights or hydraulic disc brakes?
At the heart of the system is a rear-facing HD camera combined with radar sensors mounted on the bike. Rather than forcing riders to glance over their shoulder in busy traffic, the system displays a live rear view on a handlebar-mounted screen while radar monitors vehicles approaching from behind. If something is closing in, the rider receives an alert without taking their eyes completely off the road ahead.
It’s a different approach than the rear-view radar systems already available from companies like Garmin, which notify riders of approaching vehicles but don’t provide a live video feed. Combining radar with a camera offers additional context, allowing riders to see exactly what’s behind them.
The bikes also incorporate highly visible lighting into the frame itself. An LED light strip acts as a daytime running light, while integrated brake lights brighten during deceleration and turn signals flash when the rider indicates a change in direction. These are familiar concepts in the automotive world but remain uncommon on bicycles.
Volkswagen and n+ have also introduced optional connected accessories, including a Bluetooth-enabled helmet with crash detection that can alert emergency contacts after a serious impact. Smart glasses, meanwhile, project navigation, speed and battery information into the rider’s field of view using an augmented reality display.

None of this technology is inexpensive. And none of it puts the onus for crashes where it squarely belongs: Drivers of vehicles.
It’s a big thing for these large car companies to produce e-bikes, but they are all pricey.
The new bikes start at more than US$5,000, with the helmet and smart glasses sold separately, placing the complete package well beyond what most everyday commuters would consider affordable.
Still, the Smart View system may point toward where urban cycling technology is headed. Whether features like integrated radar, rear-view cameras and smarter lighting eventually trickle down to more affordable bikes may be the real story to watch.
Would It Actually Prevent Common Urban Bike Crashes?
That’s less clear. While Volkswagen’s Smart View system could improve awareness of traffic approaching from behind, it may have limited impact on many of the crashes that injure cyclists in cities.
Dooring incidents, for example, happen when a parked driver suddenly opens a door into a rider’s path—often with little warning. Right-hook collisions, where drivers turn their vehicles across the path of someone cycling straight through an intersection, also unfold in seconds and typically involve vehicles beside or ahead of the rider rather than behind them.
Where the technology might prove somewhat more useful is on roads with faster-moving traffic.
A radar system that warns of an overtaking vehicle, combined with a live rear camera, could help riders decide when it’s safer to change lanes, avoid debris, prepare for a close pass or make a left turn across traffic. It may also be useful on suburban roads where cyclists regularly share space with vehicles travelling at higher speeds.
In other words, Smart View appears to be more of a situational awareness tool than a collision-avoidance system. And it certainly doesn’t help cyclists deal with bad drivers who threaten their safety.
