Georgia’s newly appointed ambassador to Germany, Aleksandre Kartozia, has formally taken up his post after presenting his credentials to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, amid efforts by Tbilisi to improve strained bilateral relations.
Georgia’s Foreign Ministry said Kartozia officially assumed his duties following the credentials ceremony in Berlin, News.Az report, citing News Georgia.
Although Kartozia was appointed ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary in September 2025, the presentation of his credentials took place almost a year later against the backdrop of a prolonged downturn in relations between Tbilisi and Berlin.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze described the start of the new ambassador’s mission as an opportunity to “reset” bilateral ties.
“We are particularly interested in resetting relations with Germany. We hope that the presentation of credentials by our ambassador and the appointment of a new German ambassador to Tbilisi will help return our relations to a positive trajectory,” Kobakhidze said.
He noted that Germany had been one of Georgia’s most important partners since the 1990s and had made a significant contribution to the country’s development.
At the same time, Kobakhidze blamed former German Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer for the deterioration in relations between the two countries.
“The former ambassador made a very negative contribution to Georgian-German relations,” he said.
Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili echoed the prime minister’s assessment, expressing hope that relations between the two countries would soon “return to normal”.
News that Kartozia would finally take up his post emerged shortly after the completion of Peter Fischer’s diplomatic mission. Fischer, who had served as Germany’s ambassador to Georgia since 2022, left the country in June 2026.
