South-western Germany is set to see temperatures of 33 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, while highs of 39 degrees are possible on Thursday in the west, the German Weather Service (DWD) announced on Monday.
The DWD forecasts that the northern half of the country will still see plenty of clouds in the sky on Tuesday.
“The weather in the south will be quite different,” said DWD meteorologist Markus Eifried.
With plenty of sunshine there, temperatures could reach up to 33 degrees – while in the north it will remain significantly cooler, with temperatures around 22 degrees, Eifried said.
On Wednesday, the sun will shine almost everywhere. According to the DWD, only the north-east will see patches of cloud throughout the day, while cumulus clouds will form over the Alps, from which isolated thunderstorms may develop.
“It will be hot across much of the country – in the south-west, it will even be very hot, reaching 37 degrees,” Eifried said.
The hot weather is set to remain for Thursday, when temperatures of up to 31 degrees are expected even by the sea, and highs of 39 degrees on the Upper Rhine and in Bavaria.
“Cumulus cloud cover will increase as the day progresses, and there may be the odd shower or even a thunderstorm, which could be quite heavy,” according to Eifried.
On Friday, temperatures of 37 degrees are possible again in Bavaria, while the north-west will be considerably more pleasant.
“The risk of showers and thunderstorms will increase significantly,” Eifried said. Heavy rain, hail and gusts of wind are therefore to be expected. Nonetheless, he said it looks set to remain very warm beyond the weekend.
