For this weekend’s Road America round, Porsche Penske Motorsport will sport two new special liveries, paying tribute to the shared history of the two giants of world motorsport.
The partnership between Porsche and Penske, sealed at the dawn of the 2023 season, where the 963 was fielded for the first time in IMSA and WECThis was inevitably accompanied, in the eyes of many observers, by fond memories of the 917/30 from the 70s, and the Porsche RS Spyder from the 2000s. Two cars that achieved success in teams where Roger Penske was also involved.
The Porsche Penske Motorsport team, which won the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring earlier this year, continues to pay tribute to the glorious past of the German brand by Endurance this season, and the Road America event will also celebrate the 60th anniversary of Team Penske, via two special liveries designed to recall the 917/30 and the RS Spyder.
The No. 6, driven by Laurens Vanthoor and Kévin Estre, will sport the blue, yellow and grey livery of the 917/30, a 1,200 horsepower monster that enabled Mark Donohue to dominate the Road America event in Can-Am in 1973.
On the other side of the garage, we’ll find car number 7, yellow and red, with Julien Andlauer and Felipe Nasr at the wheel. In 2007, Porsche won the overall classification of the American Grand Prix. Le Mans Series at Road America… with an LMP2, the RS Spyder, facing the monsters of the time that were the LMP1s.
One thing is for sure, the Porsche 963s will not go unnoticed this weekend, and we can imagine that the public has already found two favorite cars to support all weekend!
