Here’s the latest in retail sales and strategy:
Discount grocery chains ALDI and Lidl are expanding their presence in New York City, adding locations in neighborhoods where grocery competition has been limited. ALDI recently opened its first store in Midtown Manhattan and plans to add two more locations in the city this year. Lidl, meanwhile, has opened stores in Park Slope and Kips Bay as it builds its New York footprint. The expansion follows the success of urban-focused formats operated by grocers including Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods Market, which have adapted stores to maximize limited retail space.
JCPenney is using its All-Star Weekend campaign to promote its strategy of making fashion more accessible, tapping WNBA players known for their personal style and involving Girls Club of America participants in styling and game experiences. MediaPost reports the campaign focuses on athletes’ individual style rather than celebrity status as the retailer seeks to make fashion more relatable to consumers. Marisa Thalberg, CMO of JCPenney owner Catalyst Brands, said great style should not be exclusive or require expensive access.
Dollar General has brought back its annual Call for Small Businesses, inviting eligible U.S.-based companies to explore opportunities to work with the discount retailer. Small businesses that have not sold products through Dollar General within the past 18 months can apply online through Aug. 17 for a chance to participate in virtual meetings with the company’s small business team this fall, Dollar General said. The company’s small business development program also offers participants educational opportunities through its SBD Academy, product discovery resources and services designed to provide access to funding and other support.
David’s Bridal has launched a new shop-in-shop outlet concept at its McAllen, TX, store, combining discounted merchandise with its traditional full-price offerings under one roof. The Outlet Shop by David’s Bridal features discounted wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses and special occasion apparel alongside the retailer’s regular merchandise. The company says the format is designed to give shoppers more choice and value while providing a seamless shopping experience within a single location. Retail Dive reports David’s Bridal plans to expand the outlet concept to additional U.S. stores this year.
