ESC Kompakt reports that the German national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 in Bulgaria will be held in February.
In documents seen by ESC Kompakt, SWR has confirmed to interested artists that the German national final for the Eurovision Song Contest will once again be held in February. The German national final will be held on a Saturday night, meaning the show will take place on either February 6, 13, 20 or 27.
In addition, further details of how the songs competing in the selection show will be selected have been revealed. Once song submissions close on September 21, the “music team” will reveal all of the submitted songs and select the songs that will progress to the second round. In the second round, a jury of international music experts and those with links to the Eurovision Song Contest will assess the songs and provide feedback. SWR and the “music team” will review the feedback and will then select the acts going through to the final.
The “music team” consists of:
Jules Kalmbacher (music producer, songwriter, member of German jury for Eurovision 2026)
Pele Loriano (songwriter, Eurovision strategy consultant, producer for “The Code” (Eurovision 2024 winning entry) and “Wasted Love” (Eurovision 2025 winning entry))
Florian Müller (Artists & Repertoire publisher)
Celina Spanier (independent music manager)
Lilly Behling (artist and label manager)
The rules for applications are as follows:
Participants must be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2027.
Participants must have a strong connection to Germany (eg. German citizenship, residency in Germany, fluency in German, being of German descent).
For logistical reasons, participants must be resident in Germany or a neighbouring country.
Participants may apply to other national selections, provided that they inform SWR. If they are selected for Das Deutsche Finale 2027, then they must withdraw from any other selection they are participating in.
Songs must not have been publicly performed or released before September 1, 2026 and must not exceed three minutes.
Songs can be in any language.
Songs created using AI are not allowed.
The closing date for applications is September 21, 2026 at 12:00 CEST.
Sarah Engels represented Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 with “Fire”. She placed 23rd in the final, receiving 12 points, all of which came from the jury.

Germany was one of seven countries to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. The country has taken part in every contest since then, apart from in 1996, when they failed to make it through the qualifying round. To date Germany has won the contest twice. The first time was in 1982 when Nicole sang “Ein Bisschen Frieden” in Harrogate, which later became a global hit. Germany didn’t win again until 2010 when Lena sang “Satellite” in Oslo. She received 9 sets of 12 points, scoring 246 points overall.
