It’s no secret anymore: Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful palaces in the Berlin area. This UNESCO World Heritage Site wasbuiltbetween 1745 and 1747 forFrederick the Great, King of Prussia. And it’s not just this magnificent palace that’s worth seeing—the accompanying gardens are a must-see as well. Sanssouci Park has just been added to the list of Europe’s most impressive gardens! All the more reason to take advantage of spring in Berlin for a day trip to Potsdam.

A park without a care

Sanssouci Park is the embodiment of Frederick the Great’s philosophy of life and a prime example of the fusion of architecture and nature. Spanning 290 hectares, it features English-style landscape gardens, famous sculptures, and fountains. At the heart of the park are the famous vineyard terraces, over which the eponymous Sanssouci Palace towers.

From here, a main avenue stretching over two kilometers runs through the park, structuring it and drawing the eye to monumental buildings such as the New Palace at the western end. Neither the palace nor the park was ever intended as a venue for grand state ceremonies. The name says it all:“sans souci” means “without worry.”

Among the top 5 most beautiful gardens in Europe

A ranking by the flower delivery service Bloom & Wild has now named this park the fourth most beautiful in all of Europe. “Anyone who loves Baroque elegance and sweeping vistas cannot miss Potsdam,” the jury summarizes in its assessment. Sanssouci Park even tops the list in Germany: only the Gothenburg Botanical Garden, the Generalife Gardens of the Spanish Alhambra, and the Dutch Keukenhof are said to be even more impressive.

The park’s high ranking is likely also due to its fascinating mix of styles. While the Baroque pleasure garden near the palace captivates with geometric forms and ornate statues, the outer areas transform into expansive landscape parks modeled after the English style. Architectural treasures are hidden everywhere, such as the Chinese House with its gilded figures, the Italian Renaissance-style Orangery, or the Roman Baths.

A lot of work goes into this. Nearly 60 gardeners tend to the flower beds, hedges, trees, and lawns. Whether you’re seeking tranquility in the Botanical Garden, marveling at the historic windmill, or simply letting your gaze wander over the fountain in the central parterre: Sanssouci Park remains a timeless work of art.
