Uniper has selected SLB Capturi for a major carbon capture project in Deeside, UK, choosing the company’s amine-based technology for a proposed power plant of up to 1.38 GW. The decision gives SLB Capturi a prominent role in Uniper’s plans to build flexible, lower-carbon gas-fired generation at Connah’s Quay.
The proposed Connah’s Quay Low Carbon Power project would be developed in two phases, with the first potentially entering service in 2030. Uniper says the completed facility could provide electricity equivalent to the annual needs of about 1.1 million homes.
SLB Capturi’s Big Catch system will be designed to remove carbon dioxide from the plant’s exhaust before it reaches the atmosphere. The configuration is intended to accommodate changes in electricity output as grid demand shifts and renewable generation fluctuates.
The selection follows a front-end engineering and design competition that began in December 2024. Uniper has also named Worley as its preferred engineering, procurement and construction contractor. The project remains subject to development consent and a final investment decision.
The announcement is significant for SLB Capturi because a successful build would be its first megascale carbon capture installation for gas-fired power generation. Its existing projects have primarily involved sectors including cement, waste-to-energy and bioenergy.
The project also fits into the UK’s broader push to establish carbon capture and storage infrastructure. Connah’s Quay has been designated a priority project for the HyNet cluster, with captured CO2 planned for transport through the developing network and permanent storage in depleted offshore gas reservoirs.
