Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has created a new modular concept for its California camper.
Made in collaboration with partner Stuff Bubble, the van has been fitted out with a fully inflatable kitchen and a flexible bed system designed to make long-distance travel easier and more comfortable.
Volkswagen says that unlike a traditional camper conversion, the modules can be installed by a single person and removed when not in use. When not needed, they can then be stored elsewhere, freeing up space inside the van itself.
Once inside, there’s a full kitchen and bed
The inflatable kitchen integrates into the van’s existing luggage shelf mounting system and uses an integrated closed water circuit to provide a full cooking solution while weighing just less than 10kg. Plus, because the system is modular, it can be removed and used outside.
The flexible bed provides a large sleeping area which can be configured either as a double or a single. However, even when in place, there’s still enough space for people to cook and sit. With a pop-up roof, the California can still sleep up to four people.
The pop top provides extra sleeping space
Both the kitchen and bed can be removed entirely, rather than having to be permanently fixed inside the van itself.
Volkswagen has also implemented the system into its Multivan, with a new split bed system and a full kitchen included in the more passenger-friendly model.
Both concepts have been unveiled at the Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf, where the brand will also be showcasing the ID.California Cruise, a heritage-inspired van based on teh current ID.Buzz.
