The Drone Front

The US Army has awarded Siemens Government Technologies (SGT) an $80-million contract to transform a World War II-era facility into a secure, government-controlled plant for unmanned aerial system components.

Work will take place at Anniston Army Depot in Alabama, converting the aging site into an advanced manufacturing hub that will produce electric motor stator assemblies for drones.

Throughout the initiative, SGT will use an artificial intelligence-driven “born digital” approach, relying on digital twins to model and test production lines before physical manufacturing starts.

The deal also covers related upgrades for energy resilience and operations safety.

The 12-month contract was awarded by Army Contracting Command at the Detroit Arsenal following 11 bids, with completion expected by August 2027.

SGT said that the project reinforces the military’s push to secure domestic supply chains and modernize aging industrial infrastructure to deliver “urgent Army priority.”

“The ability for the Army to control its own production and manufacturing environment…will accelerate their organic expertise and innovation for next generation unmanned aircraft system development and sustainment,” SGT President and CEO John Ustica said.
