With the “BMW M Concept Neue Klasse”, the German automaker provides a clear preview of its upcoming electric performance platform. The new sports model will also be simply called the BMW M3, rather than the iM3 or M3 Electric.

With the so-called “M Concept Neue Klasse”, BMW is previewing the electric future of the iconic BMW M3. A sharply sculpted body, four independently controlled electric motors and the central supercomputer named “Heart of Joy” are supposed to deliver a joyful driving experience.

The concept serves as a technology showcase for future BMW sports models. Its body uses distinctive lines to direct airflow and improve efficiency and performance. A prominent air intake in the hood channels incoming air directly to the electronic components to cool them.

High-voltage architecture and individual wheel control

The sporty exterior is accompanied by technology that will also be used in the upcoming electric BMW M3. At its core is the BMW M eDrive system, based on the sixth generation of BMW’s electric drive technology. Four separate electric motors each power one wheel, enabling continuously variable torque distribution. The system is controlled by the “Heart of Joy,” a central high-performance computer that replaces previously separate control units. It processes sensor data ten times faster than previous systems and manages the powertrain, brakes and vehicle dynamics in real time.

Meanwhile, the BMW M Dynamic Performance Control software is intended to balance regenerative braking seamlessly between the electric motors and the mechanical brakes. The 800-volt architecture draws power from a battery with a capacity of more than 100 kWh. Its housing is bolted securely into the underbody as a structural component, increasing torsional rigidity. However, the electric BMW M3 is not expected to be unveiled before 2027.
