(Aug 11): Uniper SE has identified about 10 sites across Europe that could be sold or leased for data-centre development, as the German utility looks to capitalise on surging demand for AI infrastructure.

The portfolio includes four sites in the UK, three in Germany, two in Sweden and one in the Netherlands, according to a presentation published Tuesday. Three of the projects are already at an advanced stage with investment decisions possible this year, the company said.

Uniper is seeking to boost its appeal to investors as Germany prepares to sell down its stake following the multibillion-euro bailout during the energy crisis in 2022. Like other European utilities, the company is looking to cash in on the data-center boom by selling or leasing former fossil-fuel power plants that offer large industrial sites and existing grid connections while helping meet the sector’s growing electricity demand.

Germany’s RWE AG last year sold a former coal plant in the UK to Amazon.com Inc. The utility has also identified more than 10 sites across Europe that could be developed and sold.

Separately, Uniper said gas-storage facilities were refilled at a faster pace during the second quarter ahead of winter, an improvement from the low levels seen in the first three months of the year.

Still, Germany, home to Europe’s largest gas-storage capacity, continues to lag behind the rest of the region. Its storage sites were just over 48% full, compared with a European average of 59%.
