Boston Bruins to play two games in Munich as part of 2027 NHL Global Series Germany

The National Hockey League and NHL Players Association announced Thursday that the Boston Bruins will play twice in Munich during the 2027-28 season, marking the first time the German city has hosted NHL regular-season games.

Both games will be played at SAP Garden as part of the 2027 NHL Global Series Germany. Additional information about dates, tickets and packages will be announced at a later date.

“The 2027 NHL Global Series games in Germany present an incredible opportunity for the Bruins organization to build on our longstanding connection with fans around the world,” Boston Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs said in a statement. “We look forward to representing the Bruins and the city of Boston at one of the National Hockey League’s marquee events and engaging with our passionate fanbase in Munich, across Germany and beyond.”

Bruins head coach Marco Sturm is a native of Germany and became the NHL’s first German head coach when Boston hired him in June 2025. Sturm was also the first German-born player in Bruins history, playing five seasons for Boston (2005-10). He also coached the German men’s national hockey team from 2015-18, leading his country to a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The games in Germany will also be a homecoming for Bruins player JJ Peterka, a Munich native who ranks among the top 10 German-born players in NHL history in goals, assists and points. Boston acquired Peterka on June 26, the day of the NHL draft, by trading two first-round picks to the Utah Mammoth. The 24-year-old scored 25 goals and notched 22 assists for Utah last season. He also represented Germany at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The NHL also announced that the Edmonton Oilers will play two games in Cologne as part of the 2027 Global Series Germany, bringing Oilers star Leon Draisaitl back to his home city. Draisaitl, the 2019-20 NHL MVP, is the highest-scoring German player in NHL history.

Peterka and Draisaitl were in Munich on Thursday as the NHL announced a multiyear partnership with FC Bayern Munich, Germany’s biggest and most successful club soccer team. The partnership is designed to accelerate the growth of hockey in Germany and the development of FC Bayern in North America.

Both Peterka and Draisaitl exchanged signed jerseys with Bayern Munich player Alphonso Davies, who grew up in Edmonton and plays for the Canadian national soccer team.

The games in Munich will mark the Bruins’ second trip to Europe for regular-season games. The Bruins traveled to Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, to open the 2010-11 season with two games against the Phoenix Coyotes.
