SAIC Volkswagen officially launched the ID. ERA 5S plug-in hybrid sedan at the 2026 Chengdu Auto Show, which opened on Friday, with a starting price below its pre-sales price as the joint venture seeks to gain share in one of China’s most competitive price segments.

The new model is available in 5 variants, with official starting prices of 119,900 yuan ($17,680), 129,900 yuan, 139,900 yuan, 144,900 yuan and 149,900 yuan, respectively.

SAIC Volkswagen is offering limited-time incentives for the new model, bringing prices down to 89,900 yuan ($13,260), 99,900 yuan, 109,900 yuan, 114,900 yuan and 119,900 yuan, respectively.

The offers reduce prices by 30,000 yuan from the official list prices and include incentives such as a 1,000-yuan deposit that can be used as 5,000 yuan toward the final payment, as well as trade-in subsidies.

Notably, the ID. ERA 5S had a starting pre-sales price of 115,900 yuan when pre-sales began on August 11.

The ID. ERA 5S is the second model in the ID. ERA lineup and its first sedan, following the ID. ERA 9X extended-range SUV (sport utility vehicle).

The model measures 4,836 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width and 1,505 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,766 mm and a drag coefficient of 0.247.

The ID. ERA 5S uses a 1.5-liter plug-in hybrid system, with the engine delivering a maximum power output of 80 kW and the drive motor producing peak power of 130 kW.

It has a CLTC battery-only range of 160 kilometers and a combined range of more than 2,000 kilometers. Fuel consumption with a depleted battery is 2.82 liters per 100 kilometers, while charging from 30% to 80% takes 15 minutes.

The cabin features an 8.8-inch instrument display and a 15.6-inch 2.5K central touchscreen as standard across the lineup, with the voice system jointly developed with iFlytek.

SAIC Volkswagen said the ID. ERA 5S is the Volkswagen brand’s first sedan globally to offer urban NOA (navigation on autopilot) capability.

Its Xingyun assisted-driving system is deeply customized based on Horizon Robotics’ (HKEX: 9660) HSD algorithm and supports highway NOA, urban NOA, automated parking, valet parking and cross-floor memory parking.

At the auto show, SAIC Volkswagen also showcased the ID. ERA 8X and ID. ERA 5X for the first time, putting 4 ID. ERA models on display alongside the already-launched ID. ERA 9X.

The ID. ERA 5X is the first battery electric vehicle in the ID. ERA lineup and is built on the CMP (China Main Platform).

The joint venture plans to launch 7 new energy vehicle (NEV) models this year. The ID. ERA 9X was launched on April 25 and surpassed 10,000 deliveries within 2 months.
