A speeding Chevrolet Corvette slammed into a Mercedes-Benz SUV in New York City on Thursday morning, setting off a spectacular crash that sent the SUV flying backward and a pedestrian into the air.

Surveillance video from the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan shows the Mercedes careening across the intersection, climbing over parked vehicles, and eventually landing on its side. The Corvette continued toward the sidewalk, where it struck a 34-year-old pedestrian before crashing into a building.

Somehow, everyone survived. The pedestrian suffered a broken leg and was recovering in the hospital, according to his family, while the people hospitalized from the Corvette were reported in stable condition.

Police later arrested 27-year-old Eric Torres, identified by local news outlets as the Corvette driver. He now faces charges of reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

The Crash Was Caught From Multiple Angles

The collision happened near West 204th Street and Sherman Avenue. According to NBC New York, authorities said the Corvette was speeding when it struck the Mercedes-Benz SUV.

Security footage shows just how much energy was involved in the collision. The Mercedes is knocked backward and sent across the street, where it crashes into parked vehicles before rolling onto its passenger side.

The Corvette takes a different path. Video shows it heading toward the sidewalk and striking the pedestrian hard enough to throw him into the air.

According to ABC7 New York, the pedestrian was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition. The Corvette driver and a passenger were also hospitalized in stable condition.

Police are now investigating whether one or both vehicles were drag racing before the collision, ABC7 reported. Authorities have not said that street racing has been established as the cause of the crash.

The Mercedes Occupants Had Another Problem

The people inside the overturned Mercedes were left trapped after the SUV came to rest on its side.

Surveillance footage shows them banging on a window from inside until building superintendent Jorge Martinez came over to help. Martinez told NBC New York that he broke the sunroof and pulled them out.

What happened next caught him off guard.

“I broke the sunroof and I pulled them out and when I pulled them out they left,” Martinez told NBC New York.

Police said the Mercedes driver fled before officers arrived and was still being sought Thursday. ABC7 reported that investigators were looking for that driver as the investigation continued.

Neighbors Say Speeding Has Become A Familiar Sight

For people who live around Sherman Avenue, the severity of the wreck was shocking. Reports of reckless driving in the area were not.

CBS News New York spoke with residents who described doughnuts, speeding through red lights, and suspected street racing as recurring problems along Sherman Avenue.

One witness gave 1010 WINS an even more specific account, saying he saw the Corvette making multiple high-speed passes before hearing the collision.

That history is now part of the larger question surrounding Thursday’s wreck. Police have confirmed that the Corvette was traveling at a high rate of speed, while the possible drag-racing angle remains under investigation.

The Corvette Driver Was Arrested

Torres was arrested later Thursday and charged with reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

The aggravated unlicensed operation charge means police are accusing Torres of driving despite an issue with his driving privileges. The reporting available Thursday did not establish the underlying reason for that charge, so we’ll leave the details there until court or police records provide more information.

Meanwhile, investigators were still looking for the Mercedes driver and working to determine exactly what led up to the collision.

The footage left plenty of viewers stunned that the outcome wasn’t worse, particularly after watching the pedestrian take a direct hit. Considering the Mercedes ended up on its side, the Corvette reached the sidewalk and building, and three people were hospitalized, everyone making it out alive is remarkable enough on its own.

Torres is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
