The BMW Championship is the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs and on Friday, Aug. 21, it’s the second round of this no-cut event. There are 50 players battling it out for 30 spots for next week’s Tour Championship.
That’s the game within the game. Meanwhile, there are trophies to be won. The BMW actually gives out two: one for winning the tournament and another called the J.K. Wadley Trophy, which dates back to the event’s days as the Western Open.

You can also monitor the always-changing FedEx Cup Playoffs projected standings, which get altered after every par, birdie and bogey recorded. After 36 holes, Michael Thorbjornsen is sitting at No. 30, making him the “bubble boy” heading to the weekend.

There had been only three eagles on the 17th hole Friday and Clark nearly had the fourth, but he just missed a long putt. But his birdie from 3 ½ feet got him to 12 under and the outright lead. He then parred 18 to make his second striaght 64 official. Clark has 0 bogeys over two days.
Gary Woodland goes birdie-birdie on Nos. 17-18 to take lead
Woodland closed his 5-under 65 on Friday with a pair of birdies. A few holes earlier, he chipped in for eagle. He’s at 11 under and in the solo lead and has likely put himself into the final pairing Saturday.
Wyndham Clark has made it a two-way tie for the lead
Clark is 4 under through 10 and 10 under overall, tying J.J. Spaun for the BMW lead.
Rory McIlroy fires second-round 69
McIlroy has bounced back from a poor outing a week ago with scores of 64-69 in St. Louis. He was tied for sixth at 7 under when he completed his first 36 holes.

Those two trail outright leader J.J. Spaun but they each through 36 holes and sitting at 8 under. Spaun is 10 under.

The lefty is up to 26th in the projected standings, a bump of 10 spots from where he was when the week started.
J.J. Spaun takes outright lead at the BMW
Spaun is 3 under through five and has it to 9 under overall, good for the solo lead. Last month, Spaun made a special trip to the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland, ahead of the Genesis Scottish Open, as the 2025 U.S. Open champ treated his caddie, Mark Carens, and swing coach, Adam Schriber, to a round at the Home of Golf.
“I’ve always thought really tough courses fit my game. When I’m playing my best I hit lots of fairways, lots of greens. And usually the putter isn’t always my strong suit, so then when I do putt well, like this week, like I’m in contention,” he said after his round. “When fairways and greens in reg are a premium, that’s kind of where I do well. Like a U.S. Open, I guess, Torrey Pines, I mean, even here. Like, yes, I’m double digits under par, but I mean, you have to hit fairways, you have to hit greens and you have to make putts. Definitely bombers’ courses aren’t great for me.”

Michael Thorbjornsen opened his round with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 1 and 2 before making another at the 5th to get to 7 under and grab the solo lead early Friday at the BMW Championship.
