Volkswagen Tukan pickup truck breaks cover in Brazil, based on MQB platform
German automaker Volkswagen has introduced its pickup truck, the Tukan, in the Brazilian market at the Barretos Rodeo Festival. Pickup trucks are a niche category in the Indian market, but the segment is in demand in South America. However, the Indian market has started to see growing interest in lifestyle pickups, with models such as the Isuzu V-Cross, new Toyota Hilux and Mahindra Scorpio Lifestyler attracting attention. There will be single-cab and double-cab versions of the pickup truck, targeting different buyers, with sales to start in the first half of 2027. The single-cab version, dubbed ‘Robust’, has an extended cargo bed and is mostly meant for commercial and professional users. The double-cab ‘Extreme’ focuses on lifestyle and personal use while offering additional equipment and greater versatility. The larger cargo bed is designed to accommodate loads, while Volkswagen will also offer accessories to adapt the pickup for different applications.
Volkswagen Tukan: Design
The Tukan features a purpose-built pickup design rather than looking like a Volkswagen passenger vehicle with its rear section converted into a cargo bed. At the front, the pickup gets a tall nose with high-mounted LED lighting, a black grille and large air intakes. The side profile features squared-off wheel arches, protective body cladding and side steps.
At the rear, vertically positioned tail lamps flank a tailgate featuring the ‘Tukan’ lettering. Volkswagen has showcased the launch version in a Canary Yellow finish.
Volkswagen Tukan MQB Platform
The Tukan is based on a modified version of Volkswagen’s MQB architecture, marking the first application of the platform in a Volkswagen pickup truck. Volkswagen has made several structural changes to cater to the needs of a commercial vehicle. The rear suspension is now leaf springs, which are more suitable for carrying heavier loads and tackling uneven terrain. The wheelbase has also been extended to provide enough space for the passenger compartment and cargo bed. Multiple Powertrain Options On The Cards: Volkswagen hasn’t unveiled the Tukan’s complete technical specifications. However, reports suggest that the entry-level version could be powered by a 1.6L naturally aspirated petrol engine mated to a manual transmission.
Another possibility is a 1.0L flex-fuel engine with an automatic gearbox. Higher-spec variants could reportedly use Volkswagen’s 1.5L TSI Evo2 engine, potentially paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Electrification is expected to play an important role in Volkswagen Brazil’s future product strategy, with the automaker stating that its new locally developed models will offer at least one electrified variant.
Volkswagen Tukan: Built in Brazil
The Tukan has been developed specifically for the Brazilian market and will be manufactured locally. Volkswagen says around 76 per cent of the pickup’s components will be sourced from Brazil. The development programme has included more than two million kilometres of testing, with customers also participating in real-world evaluations. Feedback from these tests resulted in several refinements, including changes to the air intake and air-conditioning system.
Production will take place at Volkswagen’s São José dos Pinhais facility in Paraná. The plant also uses artificial intelligence-based systems to inspect stamped components as part of its manufacturing process.

Will the Volkswagen Tukan come to India?
At present, there are no plans to introduce the Volkswagen Tukan in India. The German automaker’s immediate focus in the Indian market remains on SUVs, with a new sub-4-metre SUV confirmed for launch in 2027.
The upcoming model will sit below the Taigun and is expected to share its platform with the Skoda Kylaq. This indicates that Volkswagen’s near-term Indian product strategy is focused firmly on the compact SUV segment rather than lifestyle pickups.
The Tukan, meanwhile, has been developed primarily for Latin American markets, where pickup trucks have a considerably stronger customer base and play a much larger role in the automotive market.
