The new Porsche 911 Challenge is the brand’s most accessible factory-backed race car.Based on the 911 GT3, the Challenge features a 508-hp 4.0-liter flat-six paired with a PDK automatic; a full roll cage, racing slicks, and an air-jack system are all included.Porsche says that when the 911 Challenge goes on sale “at a later date in 2027,” it will cost $275,000.
The departure of the 718 Cayman left Porsche with more than one hole in its lineup. Besides the street cars—stop reading and go buy a GTS 4.0 right now if you even remotely have the means—Porsche’s race program lost its “entry-level” machines, the basis for the Cayman GT4 Clubsport. What to do? Turn the 911 GT3 into a race car and try to keep the price accessible for mere multimillionaires. Enter the 911 Challenge, a car that takes the GT3’s track-focused ethos to its logical conclusion.

Oh, you think your GT3’s interior is racy?
The 911 Challenge will be eligible for a variety of one-make series, including the new Porsche Sprint Trophy Porsche Owners Club races. While it is, at essence, a gutted GT3, the Challenge retains GT3 guts: a 508-hp 4.0-liter flat-six screams to 9000 rpm in its customary place just ahead of the rear bumper. Power is routed through a seven-speed PDK transmission. The modest power bump over the street car’s 502 horsepower comes from a less restrictive exhaust that nonetheless still retains a muffler and catalytic converter.

However, you won’t confuse the 911 Challenge with the street-legal car, inside or out. Bye-bye, airbags, sound deadening and fancy trim. In goes an FIA-spec roll cage, fire suppression system, and an adjustable racing seat. The windshield gets a single wiper. The stock gas tank is swapped for a 29-gallon fuel cell, and there’s an integrated air-jack system. Tires are, of course, race slicks, and they’re mounted on 18-inch wheels that use a five-bolt pattern in lieu of centerlocks. We’d imagine this makes spares and crew tools somewhat more affordable.
The steering wheel is from the GT3 RS but with “enhanced, racing-specific functions,” and Porsche kept the air conditioning. So maybe no need to invest in a cool suit on day one.

The 911 Challenge will be available “at a later stage in 2027,” and its $275,000 price includes import and delivery. And yes, that’s not cheap, but it might well be less than you’d pay for a GT3 at your local Porsche dealership. So, if your goal with a GT3 is to rip some mean track days—let alone go door-to-door after the drop of a green flag—the 911 Challenge might be the most logical way to indulge an illogical passion.
