RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – Students from Wakpala and Dupree high schools are preparing for an international exchange trip to Germany after months of preparation, fundraising and cultural learning.
The group of 20 students and chaperones will travel to Bad Lobenstein, where they’ll attend school, stay with host families and continue relationships built earlier this year when German students visited Lakȟóta Makȟóčhe.
During that visit, students took part in cultural activities, including Lakota language classes, community events and trips to sites like Bear Butte and the Badlands.
Now, local students will make their first overseas trip, arriving in Munich before spending a week in Bad Lobenstein and wrapping up with a visit to Berlin. Their itinerary includes school visits, cultural experiences and historical tours.
Organizers say the exchange is designed to build cultural understanding and leadership skills, with support from tribal partners and international programs helping make the trip possible.
