Connecticut’s latest Aldi supermarket is expected to open next month, according to East Windsor planning officials.
Construction of the 20,664-square-foot store at 151 Prospect Hill Road has been wrapped up and officials with the chain are now seeking a certificate of occupancy. The store will likely open sometime next month, according to planning officials.
The property borders Cracker Barrel, Comfort Inn, and the state Department of Transportation highway garage. It will be the chain’s 34th store and make Aldi the second largest supermarket chain in Connecticut, moving it ahead of Massachusetts-based Big Y, which currently has 33 stores in the state.
Aldi officials weren’t immediately available on Tuesday for comment on a date for the opening. The no-frills grocery chain, which was founded in Germany in 1961 and opened its first American supermarket in 1976, has grown to more than 2,400 stores across 38 states with more than 45,000 employees.
Aldi and Trader Joe’s share a common German history. Both were started by the Albrecht family, but split into separate companies in the 1960s. Aldi’s division in the United State, which is headquartered in suburban Chicago, has additional Connecticut stores in its development pipeline, including stores in Clinton, Bristol and Stratford.
