With Labor Day coming up, its means a three-day weekend for many people.

This year, Labor Day is on Sept. 7, 2026. The holiday is celebrated each year on the first Monday in September. It has been this way since 1894 after President Grover Cleveland signed a law passed by Congress designating the first Monday in September for workers.

The holiday celebration is rooted in the labor movement of the 19th century and originated during a dismal time for America’s workers, who faced long hours, low wages and unsafe conditions.

As labor unions and activists advocated and fought for better treatment for workers at the height of the Industrial Revolution, the idea arose to establish a day dedicated to celebrating the members of trade and labor unions, according to History.com.

Here’s a list of grocery stores and if they will be open or closed on Labor Day.

Is Aldi open on Labor Day?

Aldi stores will be open, but will have limited hours. See store hours using the store locator.

Aldi is only closed on New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Is Walmart open on Labor Day?

Yes. Walmart will be open on Labor Day.

Walmart is only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Is Costco open on Labor Day?

No. Costco will be closed on Labor Day. 

Costco is closed on New Year’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Is BJ’s open on Labor Day?

Yes. BJ’s Wholesale Club will be open on Labor Day.

BJ’s Wholesale Club is only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Is Sam’s Club open on Labor Day?

Yes. Sam’s Club will be open on Labor Day.

Sam’s Club is closed on New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Is Publix open on Labor Day?

Yes. Publix will be open on Labor Day. Publix pharmacies are usually closed on federal holidays.

Publix stores are only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.
