Potato waffles are enjoyed by kids and adults alike. They are a key part of freezers across the UK, but there are plenty of different options available.
It can be hard to know which will taste best while also offering good value for money. Birds Eye offers a branded potato waffle that has remained popular for years. However, most of the major UK supermarkets also sell their own unbranded versions.
With all the options available, I decided to sample a few potato waffles to see which tastes best. I compared potato waffles from Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Asda and Birds Eye, and was surprised by the results. I cooked all the potato waffles in the oven following their instructions.
Lidl – £1.45
At the bottom of my rankings came Lidl as its potato waffle was far too tasteless. It came out of the oven wrinkly and cracked. While it had a firm crunch, the inside was far too dry for my liking. After one bite, I’d had enough.

Asda – £1.44
Next came Asda, which was significantly better than Lidl. It looked similar to Birds Eye’s potato waffles, yet was much thicker. It was firm with a pleasant crunch and had a fluffy potato inside. However, it was just too dry to rank any higher.

Tesco – £1.65
Tesco’s potato waffles were thinner than Asda’s yet had a much better flavour. The potato waffles weren’t dry and had more flavour. It had a crunch on the outside and a soft inside.

Birds Eye – £1.50 for 10 from Asda
The Birds Eye potato waffle stood out among most supermarket options. It had the ideal crispy outside and soft middle. The potato waffle cooked well and was golden when taken out of the oven. It wasn’t dry and packed with the flavour you want from a potato waffle.

Aldi – £1.45
Aldi beat Birds Eye as its potato waffle was thick, tasty and fluffy. It had a crispy outside and tasted very similar to the branded potato waffles. It tasted just as you would want a potato waffle to. All the supermarket packets contained 12 waffles, compared to the 10 in the Birds Eye box, making Aldi’s much better value for money and an even tastier potato waffle.
