I have been trying to sell off most of my Hot Wheels collection for several weeks now. Sometimes I won’t get a single message for days. Then, three or four people will almost start fighting over certain items. One thing’s certain: posting photos of the entire transport case wasn’t effective.
Once I switched to pictures of individual models or up to two cars per shot, everything was a lot smoother. I don’t feel upset about letting them go, as I’ve made sure to hold on to the ones I like the most.
Also, there’s a constant influx of new collectibles to look for, and it’s just not feasible to keep accumulating for years in a row. Take for instance, Mattel’s special Hot Wheels Collector Edition models. I just recently showed you two of them that came out of the vault for a limited time: the ’67 Off Road Camaro and the ’93 Nissan Hardbody (D21).
These are older items, but we also have some clues about what’s coming up in 2027. I’ve already discussed the new variations of the BMW M3 GTR and the ‘69 Chevrolet Corvette. And now we know what the ZAMAC release will be like: it’s the second iteration of Charlie Angulo’s 2023 Nissan Z GT4.
That’s right, we’ve only seen one of these before, back in 2024 for the Car Culture: Race Day set. It was definitely overshadowed by the Rexy/Roxy duo, as everyone was almost desperate to find at least one of those two. I certainly think this casting deserves more attention, and I imagine a Calsonic-inspired livery might just do the trick.
We’ll definitely have to wait a little while longer for that to happen though, so let’s just focus on what’s already available out there: the latest car in the Collector Edition series is up for grabs if you can find a Target store nearby. The ‘78 Porsche 935-78 is by far one of my favorite Hot Wheels item this year, and getting it from eBay is my only hope.
I still regret letting go of my 2017 Car Culture: Race Day variation all those years ago. And Mattel hasn’t paid too much attention to Jun Imai’s casting this decade. This is the third variation since the 2019 Silhouettes release, and we all know the NFT version is unobtainable for most of us.
The diecast manufacturer typically releases four store-exclusive recolors of certain castings to “help” you get the $20 receipts needed for the mail-in process. This time, the team in El Segundo has been even more “generous” than that, as you can look forward to twelve different cars available in Target stores.
I’ve only seen photos of eight of them on Mattel’s official page, but that should make the hunt even more exciting if you haven’t already seen all of them on eBay. I’d definitely love a closer look at the Mazda RX-3, the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet and the Maserati Tipo 61.
