The good folks from ‘The Fast Lane Car‘ channel on YouTube dared to show us a feisty skirmish between the FPC Corvette and the twin-turbo 911 Turbo S with conditions that are appalling to diehard quarter-mile dragstrip aficionados: an unprepped surface at a mile above seal level somewhere in Colorado…
First, though, let’s meet the protagonists. Well, sort of, because the guys first had a few surprises up their sleeve. For the warm-up race, they brought a used Audi e-tron GT battery-electric executive car, not the RS version, and pitted it against a different Porsche 911 Turbo S, one that’s more than a decade and a half old but still in pretty good shape to do consistent 12.1s and 12.2s quarter-mile passes – on that unprepped surface and at a mile above sea level.
However, the electric Audi, despite its heft, doesn’t care about thinning air and unprepped tarmac – it just made use of its instant torque and all-wheel drive to shame the old and cool Porsche 911 Turbo S. After that, it was time for the old 911 Turbo S to meet the current 911 Turbo S – the 992 series, though sans facelift, hence it’s a regular ICE machine rather than the all-new hybrid supercar.
Anyway, the newer Porsche 911 Turbo S easily beat the older one, although it posted a great 12.08s pass. On the other hand, the current 911 Turbo S did an 11.1s pass at around 130 mph. Then, at long last, starting at the eight-minute mark, they finally bring the C8 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 to the brawl, and the Porsche 911 Turbo S knows that it has been involved in serious competition.
That’s because now it hits a 10.59s pass at 131 mph while the record-breaking 670-hp FPC-equipped C8 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 wasn’t even close: 11.62s at 122 mph. Quite obviously, the mile above sea level combined with the naturally aspirated V8 of the Corvette and RWD wasn’t a great mix. There was one last chance to redeem itself, though: a roll race, or two, since the first one didn’t count as the Corvette driver jumped the start. Well, this one was a lot closer, frankly, but the C8 still lost…
Better luck next time, dear GM fans, and perhaps The Fast Lane Car guys will find another Porsche and Corvette lying around waiting to be drag-tested: we suggest they encounter the 992.2 mid-cycle refreshed Porsche 911 Turbo S, which now has a hybrid powertrain, churning out 701 horsepower and making it the most powerful 911 ever among series-production models.
As for the opponent, we can’t think of a better fit other than the first-ever C8 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport X, which is also a hybrid model and has 721 combined horsepower from the Grand Sport’s new naturally aspirated 6.7-liter LS6 cross-plane crank V8 and the hybrid system of the ZR1X!
