Germany Inflation Rate April 2026: Destatis Reports 2.9% CPI Increase - News and Statistics

The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported on Thursday that Germany’s inflation rate for April 2026 is projected to reach 2.9 percent. This preliminary figure represents the change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) compared to the same month last year. According to the authority, consumer prices rose by 0.6 percent compared to March 2026.

Excluding food and energy—often referred to as core inflation—the rate is estimated at 2.3 percent for April. Energy prices are expected to have increased by 10.1 percent year-on-year, marking the strongest rise in this category since February 2023, when energy prices surged 19.1 percent compared to February 2022.

In addition to the national CPI, Destatis also publishes the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), which serves as the primary measure for assessing price stability within European monetary policy. For April 2026, the preliminary HICP shows a 2.9 percent increase year-on-year and a 0.5 percent rise compared to the previous month. The HICP and national CPI differ in their scope, methodology, and weighting. Since January 2026, significant methodological and classification changes have been applied to the HICP, and it is now reported on an index base of 2025 equals 100.

The final results for April 2026 are scheduled for release on May 12, 2026.
