The Pentagon is planning to withdraw about 5,000 troops from Germany, multiple news outlets reported on Friday.
The withdrawal will take place over the next six to 12 months, Reuters and Fox News reported.
Defense officials speaking to CBS News told the outlet the move signaled discontent with the level of support offered by European allies for the U.S. war with Iran. They also said it would not affect the transportation of injured troops to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.
Germany has the largest U.S. military presence on the Continent, with some 34,000 troops.
The news comes days after President Donald Trump said on his Truth Social platform that “The United States is studying and reviewing the possible reduction of Troops in Germany, with a determination to be made over the next short period of time.”
On Thursday, the president made similar comments about potential troop reductions in Italy and Spain.
