The remarks from Merz came after US President Donald Trump\u2019s administration announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from the European nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe share a common goal: Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons,\u201d he said on the US social media platform X. Objectively speaking, there is virtually no possibility of the US supplying weapons systems of this kind,\u201d Merz told public broadcaster ARD in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has different plans<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Sunday, Trump said that the US plans to reduce its troop presence in Germany \u201ca lot further\u201d. \u201cWe\u2019re going to cut way down, and we\u2019re cutting a lot further than 5,000,\u201d he told reporters in Florida when asked about the move.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the Pentagon initially announced that it would pull some<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/world\/us-orders-withdrawal-of-5000-troops-from-germany-after-differences-over-iran-war-14006690.html\" id=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/world\/us-orders-withdrawal-of-5000-troops-from-germany-after-differences-over-iran-war-14006690.html\" class=\"body_anchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">5,000 troops<\/a> out of Germany. However, when asked about the reason behind the move, Trump didn\u2019t explain and said an even bigger reduction was coming.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, on Saturday, Germany\u2019s defence minister appeared to take in stride the news that 5,000 US troops would be leaving his country.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/world\/if-us-cant-secure-strait-of-hormuz-europe-cant-either-german-fm-13990616.html\" id=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/world\/if-us-cant-secure-strait-of-hormuz-europe-cant-either-german-fm-13990616.html\" class=\"body_anchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Boris Pistorius<\/a> said the drawdown, which Trump has threatened for years, was expected, and he said European nations needed to take on more responsibility for their own defence.<\/p>\n<p>However, he also emphasised that security cooperation benefited both sides of the trans-Atlantic partnership. \u201cThe presence of American soldiers in Europe, and especially in Germany, is in our interest and in the interest of the US,\u201d Pistorius told the German news agency dpa.
