BERLIN, May 4 (Reuters) – The \u2060German \u2060defence ministry said \u2060on Monday that there had been \u200bno “definitive cancellation” by the United States of a \u200cplan devised under former \u200cpresident Joe Biden to deploy a \u2060battalion \u2060with long-range Tomahawk missiles to Germany.<\/p>\n

The comment comes \u200bafter Washington announced last week that it would reduce its military presence in Germany by \u200b5,000 soldiers, which was widely interpreted to include \u2060cancellation \u2060of the planned deployment \u2060of \u200bweapons.<\/p>\n

“We’re not talking about a definitive cancellation,” the \u200bdefence ministry \u2060spokesperson said, adding that the weapons were “meant to be stationed (in Germany) and may well still be.”<\/p>\n

He said that in any case, \u2060there were already plans underway by European nations to \u2060procure weapons systems that would fill the gap.<\/p>\n

The Pentagon announced the drawdown from Germany, its largest European base, on Friday, as a rift over the Iran war and tariff tensions placed further strain on relations between the U.S. and \u2060Europe.<\/p>\n

The long-range fires had been due to form a significant extra element of deterrence against Russia while Europeans developed such \u200blong-range missiles themselves.<\/p>\n
