(Casey Auman\/U.S. Army)<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">A U.S. Army tank brigade is gearing up for a deployment to Europe as operations along NATO\u2019s eastern flank show no signs of slowing down following last week\u2019s announcement that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/europe\/2026-05-01\/trump-withdraw-5000-troops-germany-21550153.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">5,000 troops will be pulled from Germany<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division cased its colors Friday at Fort Hood, Texas, to mark the start of a nine-month mission aimed at deterring Russian aggression in Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Nearly 4,000 soldiers from the \u201cBlack Jack\u201d brigade will be taking up positions in Poland and other areas along NATO\u2019s eastern edge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">\u201cMake no mistake, our adversaries are paying attention,\u201d division commander Maj. Gen. Tom Feltey said during the ceremony. \u201cWhen an armored brigade combat team deploys forward, it sends a clear and unmistakable signal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The ceremony coincided with a Pentagon announcement Friday that roughly 5,000 U.S. troops will be pulled out of Germany, a move that could have implications for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/europe\/2026-05-03\/germany-trump-troop-cuts-21561959.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">how the Army operates across Poland and the Baltic<\/a> states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">While rotational units such as the incoming brigade are tasked with coordinating with allies in that region, permanently based troops in Germany also play a big role in those countries, all of which border Russia. <\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The Vilseck, Germany-based 2nd\u00a0Cavalry Regiment is currently fanned out in the region, with troops involved in a show-of-force road march in Poland. They\u2019re traveling more than 600 miles from their base in Germany to training areas for various exercises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The regiment also is operating in Lithuania, a front-line NATO state sandwiched between the Russian military exclave of Kaliningrad and Kremlin ally Belarus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">At Pabrade Training Area in Lithuania, 2nd\u00a0Cavalry troops have been experimenting with unmanned ground vehicles and aerial drones to better incorporate them into their fighting formations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The unit has been the focal point for U.S. Army Europe and Africa\u2019s efforts to draw lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war and update American infantry tactics for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/branches\/army\/2026-04-13\/army-data-center-command-control-21361140.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">future battlefield<\/a> where unmanned systems play a dominant role.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mb2-plus4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/050526EUROPEphoto03.JPG\" alt=\" Two M1 Abrams tanks maneuver across a dusty desert plain.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"default-font lh-default ma0 mh3 mt0 pb3\">\n\t\t\t\tU.S. Army M1 Abrams main battle tanks conduct defensive operations during a training rotation at Fort Irwin, Calif., Oct. 27, 2024. (Christopher Bailey\/U.S. Army)<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">However, the unit appears to have been pegged for a withdrawal from Germany, where it was a fixture throughout the Cold War.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">It\u2019s unclear where the unit would go if the Pentagon follows through with its plan to pull soldiers within six to 12 months, but there are few, if any, options for the regiment to relocate to another location in Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Several lawmakers have raised concerns about the plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">\u201cWe are very concerned by the decision to withdraw a U.S. brigade from Germany,\u201d Sen. Roger Wicker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and his House counterpart, Rep. Mike Rogers, said in a statement Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">Germany has \u201cstepped up\u201d in response to President Donald Trump\u2019s call for greater defense spending and has provided \u201cseamless access, basing, and overflight\u201d for U.S. forces in support of Operation Epic Fury, the campaign against Iran, they said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The 2nd Cavalry Regiment is the only U.S. brigade based in Germany, where there are roughly 34,000 troops. The other unit affected by the Pentagon plan is a long-range fires battalion that was expected to take up a posting in Germany later this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">The decision to remove 5,000 troops was the product of a long planning process, the Pentagon said Friday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"storyline-p f4 \">However, the announcement also came on the heels of sharp criticism from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about the U.S. handling of the Iran crisis.
