A square outside local parliament in Berlin has been renamed after Holocaust survivor Margot Friedl\u00e4nder, who died last year at the age of 103.<\/p>\n
The plaque bearing her name was officially unveiled on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The move was intended to honour “a great Berliner and a person whose life obliges us to remember her forever,” said Parliament President Cornelia Seibeld during the ceremony in the plenary chamber.<\/p>\n
Friedl\u00e4nder, who was born in Berlin in 1921, went into hiding in the city when the Nazis began persecuting Jews but was captured and sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp.<\/p>\n
She moved to the US after the camp was freed by Allied forces at the end of World War II but returned to Berlin in 2010, devoting much of her time to speaking to school aged children about the Holocaust.<\/p>\n
An honorary citizen of Berlin, she died on May 9 last year and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in the Weissensee district of the German capital.<\/p>\n
“Her mission was clear: to speak for those who could no longer speak. She did so tirelessly, especially for young people,” said Seibeld.<\/p>\n
Berlin\u2019s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner said that Friedl\u00e4nder was proof that humanity could triumph over inhumanity. “Margot Friedl\u00e4nder always kept her eyes fixed on the good. She placed her trust in humanity and tolerance,” he said, adding that Friedl\u00e4nder had also recognized the current threats to democracy and the rise of anti-Semitism.<\/p>\n
