BERLIN, May 11 (Reuters) – The German government has extended employment guarantees for staff of the PCK refinery in \u200cthe eastern town of Schwedt by a further six \u200cmonths until the end of 2026, Economy Minister Katherina Reiche told Reuters on \u200bMonday.<\/p>\n
Germany is scrambling to find alternative oil supplies for PCK, which supplies most of the city of Berlin’s fuel, after Russia stopped deliveries via the Druzhba pipeline this month, stripping the \u200crefinery of around 17% \u2060of its annual supplies.<\/p>\n
Berlin has been in talks with Poland about possibly raising deliveries, saying capacity \u2060for Schwedt was secured at 80% for the month of May, down from 85% previously.<\/p>\n
“In order to further stabilise the \u200bsite and \u200bprovide employees with reliable prospects, \u200bthe existing job protection arrangements \u200cat the PCK refinery will be extended by six months until the end of 2026,” Reiche said.<\/p>\n
She added it was an important signal to the more than 1,000 employees at the site, given the uncertain situation.<\/p>\n
Schwedt has been an ongoing \u200cirritation for the German government because \u200bit is majority-owned by Russia’s Rosneft \u200beven though the refinery \u200bhas been brought under de facto control by \u200cthe German government via a \u200btrusteeship model.<\/p>\n
Rosneft, which \u200bowns more than half of PCK Schwedt, recently filed a fresh lawsuit against the set-up.<\/p>\n
Reiche said the government \u200band regional stakeholders \u200cwould work together to strengthen Schwedt as a business \u200bsite.<\/p>\n
