{"id":12989,"date":"2026-05-13T02:12:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T02:12:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/12989\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T02:12:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T02:12:17","slug":"albrecht-weinberg-a-holocaust-survivor-who-returned-to-germany-in-his-80s-dies-at-101-world-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/12989\/","title":{"rendered":"Albrecht Weinberg, a Holocaust survivor who returned to Germany in his 80s, dies at 101 | World News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BERLIN \u2013 Albrecht Weinberg, who survived several Nazi concentration and death camps and lost most of his family <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-vanishing-holocaust-survivors-6d055d1d386567d6117ca634f233b0a9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the Holocaust<\/a> before returning to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/germany\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Germany<\/a> in his 80s, has died at the age of 101, authorities in his home region said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Weinberg died in Leer, in northwestern Germany, weeks after he marked his birthday and the premiere of a film about his life, \u201cEs ist immer in meinem Kopf\u201d (\u201cIt is always in my head\u201d), attended by hundreds of guests, the city said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince returning from New York to his East Frisian home 14 years ago, Albrecht recounted tirelessly and with incredible energy his terrible experiences during the Nazi era and warned again and again against forgetting,\u201d Mayor Claus-Peter Horst said.<\/p>\n<p>Weinberg, who was born in Rhauderfehn, near Leer, on March 7, 1925, survived incarceration at the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/auschwitz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Auschwitz<\/a>, Mittelbau-Dora and Bergen-Belsen camps as well as three death marches at the end of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/world-war-ii\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World War II<\/a>. He spent years teaching high school students and others about the atrocities he had to live through. Weinberg said the memories of his wartime experiences still haunted him. \u201cI sleep with it, I wake up with it, I sweat, I have nightmares; that is my present,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said he worried what would happen when he was <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-vanishing-holocaust-survivors-6d055d1d386567d6117ca634f233b0a9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no longer around<\/a> to bear witness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my generation is not in this world anymore, when we disappear from the world, then the next generation can only read it out of the book,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Weinberg was awarded Germany\u2019s Order of Merit in 2017 but handed it back last year in protest at a parliamentary vote in which a motion put forward by Friedrich Merz, now the country\u2019s chancellor, calling for many more migrants to be turned back at Germany\u2019s borders <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-merz-scholz-election-migration-far-right-da12c67a1eaa66301d38be03e49f4136\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passed with the help<\/a> of a far-right party.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, posted that he had got to know Weinberg well and paid tribute to him as \u201ca bridge \u2013 between past and present, between pain and hope, between the dead he could never forget and the young people whom he encouraged to seek the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 The Associated Press.
