\nBerlin-headquartered company Ecoworks has won a \u20ac23m contract to provide a green renovation of 192 apartments in 12 buildings in Hagen, Northrhein Westfalia to reduce their energy demand by 36%.\n<\/p>\n

It\u2019s billed as Germany\u2019s largest pre-war cooperative housing renovation project.<\/p>\n

With a built area of 15,000 sq m, the 12 buildings were originally built in 1966.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll be redeveloped with prefabricated fa\u00e7ade elements to reduce on-site construction time.<\/p>\n

All apartments will be brought up to KfW Efficiency House 55 standard (EH 55) to achieve carbon-neutral building operations on a net basis.<\/p>\n

Insulation, windows and electric shutters will be added to the fa\u00e7ade on site, with flat roofs re-insulated and sealed, a photovoltaic system installed directly into the grid, and larger covered balconies replacing the existing loggias.<\/p>\n

The completed project will cut annual CO\u2082 emissions by 190 tonnes.<\/p>\n

Emanuel Heisenberg, Ecoworks\u2019 founder, said: \u201cThis flagship project involving twelve buildings demonstrates the enormous potential of serial renovation for decarbonising the existing building stock.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur extremely high degree of prefabrication makes an efficient, fast and carbon-neutral transformation of the housing sector scalable.\u201d<\/p>\n

An estimated three-quarters of German residential buildings require energy renovation work, but under 1% are renovated each year.<\/p>\n
